NAIA Champions of Character

The Champions of Character process is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Champions of Character Events

For Teams: Each of the 32 teams traveling to Frankfort, Kentucky will be taking part in community service in the Frankfort area.  Teams will introduce the Champions of Character to participating organizations and help spread the importance of: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership.  The players will be visiting the following Frankfort organizations:

• Special Olympics Basketball Clinic
• Stewart Home
• Frankfort YMCA After School Programs
• Franklin County and Frankfort elementary schools

For the Frankfort/ Franklin County community: Champions of Character "Heroes": We will be recognizing a local individual/team/group at each of the 31 tournament games as Champions of Character "Heroes".  If you know someone who exemplifies the Champions of Character core values please nominate them.

For Central Kentucky High Schools:  We will be recognizing high school student-athletes as Champions of Character during the semifinal games on Monday, March 19th.  Each high school in Central Kentucky has the opportunity to nominate one male and one female student-athlete to be award as a Champion of Character.  All nominees will be invited to a reception where they will receive a challenge to continue to exemplify the Champions of Character core values: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership.  After the reception they will be awarded at center court during the halftime of a semifinal game.

Open to the public: Champion of Character Cameos: Wednesday, March 14th, from 5:00-6:20 at the Capital Plaza Hotel (adjacent to the Frankfort Convention Center).  Former female collegiate student-athletes who have excelled in different careers after collge will speak about the role of athletics in developing thier character.  Each former athlete will present for 5-10 minutes followed by question & answers.  Sessions will be secheduled at 5:00, 5:20, 5:40, and 6:00.  Teams, fans, and the public may come to all or part of these presentations.
